The Australian duo of Chris McHugh and Paul Burnett got the better of Rwanda’s Venuste Gatsinzi and Olivier Ntagengwa to go through to the final of the men’s Beach volleyball event in the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. McHugh, the Aussie veteran partnering the youngster Burnett will gun for back-to-back gold medals in the title-decider on Sunday against Canada. Rwanda displayed great fighting spirit as the scores were tied at 17-17 at one point before the Aussies showed their experience to take the first set 21-18. And then, McHugh and Burnett went on to pocket the second set 21-14.
In the other semi-final on Saturday, Canadian pair of Schachter and Dearing defeated England’s Bello brothers to book a spot in the title decider and set up a repeat of the final in Gold Coast four years ago. Meanwhile in the women’s section also, Australia will take on Canada for the Gold medal. Australian women’s pair of Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho defeated Vanuatu’s Miller Pata and Sherysyn Toko to advance to the women’s final where they will face Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana Paredes.

A total of 12 men’s and women’s teams will participate in the beach volleyball competition that will take place from 30th July to 7th August. The men’s and women’s sections will each have three pools with four teams in them. The knockout matches start on the fifth of August with the quarterfinals, the next day will be the semifinals and the medal matches will happen on the seventh of August (Sunday). Each match is played with a best of three sets. The first two sets are played to 21 points, and the third set is played to 15 points. The first team to reach 21 points – or 15 points – with a two-point advantage wins the set.
