On Thursday 21st March, the prime contest of the Prime Volleyball League’s third season is set to unfold at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. The face-off is between the seasoned Calicut Heroes, who are leading the scoreboard, and the fresh Delhi Toofans, a team new to the competition. Saqlain Tariq, the reliable captain of the Toofans, has led his team through a surprising victory over the Ahmedabad Defenders, the previous champions, in the eliminator round.
In contrast, the Calicut Heroes claimed their spot in the finals by dominating the Super 5 league, thereby avoiding the tension of the knockouts. The Heroes’ captain, Jerome Vinith, the league’s main scorer, has voiced his contentment with reaching the final after two prior semifinal upsets and without facing another high-pressure knockout game.
On Wednesday, he commented about their season’s journey and the importance of leading the Super 5 following the initial games. Calicut’s team is stocked with formidable attackers such as Vinith, Chirag Yadav, Vikas Maan, and Brazilian dynamo Luiz Felipe Perotto, all of whom have been crucial in the tournament’s key moments.
They’re complemented by the composed setter Mohan Ukkrapandian and the promising libero Mukesh Kumar, who has excelled this season with the Heroes. Conversely, the Delhi Toofans, featuring Saqlain Tariq in his first PVL appearance, have revolutionized the league’s hierarchy. Their success has resulted from a continuous seven-game win streak mixed with the enthusiasm of youth and the wisdom of experience.
