Bantamweight contender Sean O’Malley finds himself on the brink of the biggest challenge of his career. Set to face reigning champion Aljamain Sterling for the 135-pound title on August 19. O’Malley acknowledges the magnitude of the task at hand and openly recognizes Sterling’s status as a formidable obstacle.

In an interview with Bloody Elbow, O’Malley expressed his respect and admiration for Sterling’s accomplishments dubbing him the “best bantamweight UFC has ever had.” Sterling’s legacy in the division is undeniable, boasting a three-fight title defense streak, which stands as the longest in the weight class’s storied history. His record for most wins, fight time, and significant strikes landed in the division only strengthens his claim as one of the greatest.

Facing Sterling as the betting underdog doesn’t deter O’Malley. He fully understands the reasons behind the odds and relishes the opportunity to challenge himself against a fighter of Sterling’s caliber.

I’m fighting a prime bantamweight GOAT right now,” O’Malley said. “He’s the best bantamweight UFC has ever had and defended the belt more than anyone. He’s in his prime. He just beat Henry Cejudo, who’s a two-time division champion. So yeah, it’s an exciting, difficult challenge that I’m excited to go out there and compete.”

While Sterling’s grappling prowess is well-documented. O’Malley believes he possesses the style and skills to give Sterling a tough time inside the Octagon.

O’Malley’s game plan is clear avoid being taken down and controlled by Sterling’s grappling expertise. He recognizes Sterling’s strength in that area and is committed to preventing the fight from going in that direction.

My game plan’s no secret,” O’Malley explained. “I do not want him to grab ahold of me at all. He doesn’t grab me, I win the fight. He grabs me, you know, it’s not ideal. It’s not like I’m a white belt, or completely oblivious to what to do. He’s the best in the world at grappling. That’s what he does. He’s won the belt that way and he’s the best.

Despite his confidence, O’Malley is under no illusions about the challenge he’s taking on. He is fully aware of Sterling’s skill set and the magnitude of the task in front of him. Nonetheless, he remains excited and motivated to step into the Octagon and showcase his abilities against the best in the world.

“I’m not taking him lightly at all. I’m not underestimating him at all, but yeah, I’m confident, and excited to go in there. It’s the biggest test, the biggest challenge of my career.”

O’Malley prepares to face Sterling for UFC gold. Fans can anticipate a high-stakes clash that promises to deliver excitement, drama, and a showcase of elite skills. With both fighters bringing their A-game. UFC 292 is shaping up to be a must-watch event that could potentially determine the future of the bantamweight division.
