In the world of mixed martial arts, the rivalry between fighters often creates some of the most memorable and intense moments. One such rivalry that has caught the attention of fight fans is the ongoing feud between former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier. Alvarez recently made a bold claim stating that if he were to face Poirier in a trilogy bout. He would come out victorious with relative ease.

Eddie Alvarez is a former undisputed UFC lightweight champion. He has had a storied career in the world of combat sports. He has twice shared the Octagon with Dustin Poirier with their first encounter ending in an official ‘No Contest.’ The fight was halted after Alvarez landed a series of knees to a grounded Poirier in the second round resulting in controversy.

Their second meeting occurred after Alvarez’s thunderous third-round knockout of common foe Justin Gaethje. Poirier in a summer showdown the following year secured a second-round TKO victory over Alvarez. This win allowed Poirier to even the score and solidify his position in the lightweight division.

Since their last bout, Eddie Alvarez has explored other combat sports avenues including a stint with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) where he claimed a close split decision win over former featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes. He also had a stint with ONE Championship where he faced Ok Rae Yoon and suffered a decision loss before parting ways with the organization.

Despite his ventures into different promotions, Alvarez has expressed a desire to return to the UFC for a trilogy fight. His offer to Poirier on social media garnered attention and reignited the rivalry. When responding to a post questioning who the most violent fighter among Poirier, Michael Chandler, and BMF champion Justin Gaethje was, Alvarez boldly claimed that he could “beat them all.” Poirier responded with a succinct “not me cuh.”

Alvarez didn’t back down and in a reply to Poirier offered him a trilogy bout. He even insisted that he would “out-dog” Poirier once more if they were to step into the Octagon for a third time.

The history between Alvarez and Poirier is undeniably compelling. Their first bout ended controversially while their second meeting saw Poirier emerge victorious. The potential for a third fight has the makings of a classic rivalry showdown.

As for Dustin Poirier, he has been on a remarkable journey himself. After his victory over Alvarez, he continued to rise through the lightweight ranks eventually becoming the interim champion. However, his rematch with Justin Gaethje resulted in a second-round high-kick KO loss. Poirier remains eager to return to the Octagon before the end of the year seeking redemption and another chance to make his mark in the division.
