The momentous occasion took place at UFC 289 on June 10, 2023. When Nunes delivered a dominant performance and secured a unanimous decision victory over Irene Aldana before announcing her retirement. Miesha Tate reflects on her rivalry with Amanda Nunes

At the age of 35 and with a remarkable record of 23 wins and 5 losses. Nunes’s reign as the UFC Bantamweight and Featherweight champion began in July 2016 when she swiftly defeated Miesha Tate via a first-round rear-naked choke submission. From that point on, Nunes went on to conquer every UFC champion in both the 135 and 145-pound divisions. Former champion Tate and other contenders in the division can now breathe a sigh of relief. Knowing they won’t have to face the dominant force that Nunes represented.

Tate faced Nunes in a title bout and went on to have her second last fight before retiring in 2021 after a unanimous decision loss to Raquel Pennington. Tate made a comeback in July 2021 as a mother and former ONE Championship Vice President. She secured a victory over Marion Reneau with ground-and-pound strikes in the third round. Despite an experimental fight against Lauren Murphy in the flyweight division in July 2022. Tate has been absent from the octagon since then, due to a hand injury that forced her withdrawal from a scheduled bout with Mayra Bueno Silva.

Bueno Silva will now face Holly Holm. Tate defeated Bueno Silva to become champion in 2016, in the main event of UFC Vegas 77. The matchup promises to be an exciting clash between two highly skilled fighters. While Nunes’s retirement marks the end of an era in women’s MMA.
