After receiving a life-changing diagnosis just 10 days ago fighter Joisah Harrell maintains a positive outlook and considers himself fortunate. Despite the cancellation of his debut fight against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC Vegas 76. Harrell believes that his current circumstances are a stroke of luck.

Harrell was diagnosed with moyamoya, a rare brain disease, during pre-fight medical testing on July 7. The diagnosis came as a shock but Harrell sees it as a fortunate event that could have potentially saved his life. Harrell acknowledges the role that his viral cage entrance played in capturing the attention of the UFC. He believes that without that exposure the discovery of his condition may have been delayed.

Having never undergone an MRI prior to his UFC onboarding process. Harrell accepted the fight on short notice. During subsequent brain scans, he noticed something unusual. His worst fears were relieved when cancer was ruled out. But the scans revealed Moyamoya, a narrowing of blood vessels in his brain.

Harrell realizes that his path as a professional fighter provided a unique opportunity to detect the condition early. Without the medical attention prompted by his involvement in the sport. The disease may have gone undetected until it was too late.

With news of his diagnosis going public. Harrell received an outpouring of support from fans, fighters, and the media. However, instead of dwelling on the situation. Harrell maintains a positive and humorous attitude using jokes as a coping mechanism.

While moyamoya is rare Harrell is not the first fighter in UFC history to face this diagnosis. Vince Murdock, who had a similar issue in 2019. He successfully returned to fighting after surgery. Harrell plans to connect with Murdock for guidance and support as he awaits his own surgery at Stanford Medical.

Despite the emotional and physical challenges. Harrell remains level-headed and optimistic. However, he does recognize the potential financial burden associated with the upcoming procedure.

Harrell’s focus is now on his recovery and finding solutions to any challenges that lie ahead. Whether he receives assistance from the UFC or sets up a fundraising campaign. He is determined to navigate this difficult situation with resilience and determination.

Despite the delay in his fighting career due to surgery and recovery. Harrell remains committed to reaching the top of the sport. He envisions a future where he holds multiple championship belts and continues to inspire others with his remarkable journey.
