Chael Sonnen despite his past rivalry with Jon Jones recently paid his former opponent a significant compliment. Sonnen and Jones had a memorable stint as coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 17 in 2013. Which culminated in a fight at UFC 159 where Jones secured a first-round TKO victory to retain his light heavyweight title.
Following a three-year layoff, Jones returned to the Octagon at UFC 285. He swiftly submitted Ciryl Gane to claim the vacant heavyweight belt. Now set to defend his title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 on November 11 at Madison Square Garden. Jones has garnered praise from Sonnen for his fearlessness in taking on tough challenges.
According to Sonnen, Jones had originally accepted a fight against surging contender Sergei Pavlovich. This revelation impressed Sonnen and commended Jones for his willingness to face anyone. He emphasized that Jones is not afraid of stepping into a cage with formidable opponents.
While Sonnen may not have the warmest feelings towards Jones. He insists on giving credit where it’s due. Despite their past rivalry and heated exchanges. Sonnen acknowledges Jones’ courage in accepting tough matchups.
Jones had previously hinted at the possibility of retirement after facing Miocic but Sonnen is skeptical about the idea. He firmly believes that Jones is a prizefighter and the financial aspect is a crucial factor in his decision-making. According to Sonnen, Jones does not have enough money to retire making it likely that he will continue fighting.
The retirement talk surrounding Jones in Sonnen’s opinion can alienate fans and is not an ideal angle to pursue. Sonnen knows the fight game well and cautions against such statements. They can create unnecessary confusion and uncertainty among fans.
