Alexandre Pantoja’s path to the UFC flyweight championship was not an easy one. Before claiming the 125-pound gold in a spectacular victory over Brandon Moreno at UFC 290. Pantoja found himself working as an Uber Eats driver to make ends meet. Pantoja opened up about his struggles during the COVID-19 pandemic and all the sacrifices he made to pursue his dream.

After defeating Manel Kape in February 2021. Pantoja has experienced both highs and lows in his life. He had played the role of backup fighter for a title fight between Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez during the first series of Fight Island events in Abu Dhabi. He also suffered a decision loss to Askar Askarov. With financial pressures mounting up on him. Pantoja made the difficult decision to send his wife and children back to Brazil. While he stayed back in Florida to work and train.

During his time alone in Florida, Pantoja worked as an Uber Eats driver and participated in jiu-jitsu tournaments to earn some extra cash. It was his performance against Brandon Royval in August 2021 that changed everything. Pantoja’s victory earned him a well-deserved “Performance of the Night” bonus of $50,000. Which had a significant impact on his life and career as a whole.

Building on his momentum Pantoja returned to the octagon 11 months later to face Alex Perez. He finished Perez in just 91 seconds in a stunning display of his skills. Which solidifies his position as the number-one contender in the flyweight division. Pantoja patiently waited for the result of the Moreno vs Figueiredo trilogy. He knew that his shot at the title was imminent.

Throughout his journey, Pantoja acknowledges the pivotal role of his longtime head coach. Marcos “Parrumpinha” da Matta has played a huge role in his success. He credits da Matta as deserving the title of “Coach of the Year” for 2023. Despite his 3-0 record against Moreno, Pantoja is open to the idea of facing him once more. However, his focus now is on seeking new challenges and establishing his reign as the flyweight champion.

Alexandre Pantoja’s story is a testament to his resilience, determination, and unwavering pursuit of his dreams. From working as an Uber Eats driver to becoming the UFC flyweight champion. He has shown that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.
