Zhang Shuai and Maryna Zanevska will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Lyon Open on February 2.
With a satisfying 6-3, 6-2 victory over Madison Brengle to begin her title defence in Lyon, Zhang Shuai broke Madison Brengle just once in the one-hour match. She acted as the tournament’s spoiler nearly a year ago when she won by defeating local competitors Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia. Not only was it her third title overall, but it was also her first outside of China. The 34-year-old is just outside the top 20 and has done a great job of maintaining her form. Along with recently reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, she reached a final in Birmingham, a semifinal in Tokyo, and quarterfinals in Nottingham, Cincinnati, and Cleveland last year.
Even though Dalma Galfi and Maryna Zanevska are only separated by two positions in the rankings, Dalma Galfi won the match 6-1, 7-6 after an hour-long second set. Before extending her winning streak on French indoor courts to six matches, she came back from 3-5 in the second frame and was two points away from a decider. She won her biggest hardcourt title at 125K Rouen in this nation a little more than three months ago; three of her five rounds went the distance, and the other two involved a tiebreak. The Belgian eventually played for almost 11 hours, defeating players like Sara Errani, Caty McNally, and Viktorija Golubic.
