Bernabe Zapata Miralles was a long shot coming into his second round match against Holger Rune, but he overcame a first-set setback to surprise his Danish opponent. Miralles, who was 8/5 to win that match, defeated Rune 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 49 minutes to get to the final eight stage of a tournament for the first time this year. Miralles needed to save four break chances in the first game of the second set before extending the match to the third with a break of serve in the eighth game.

Giulio Zeppieri qualified for the main draw of this competition with a couple of three-set victories in the qualifiers, and he added two more in similar fashion to enter the last eight stage in Umag. Zeppieri had won his first career main draw match when he defeated Pedro Cachin in the first round, and the Italian 20-year-old made it two in two when he defeated Daniel Elahi Galan in the second round. He defeated Miralles in two hours and ten minutes, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Zeppieri, ranked 168th in the world, won 78 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points, facing only two break-points during the match.
