In the opening round of the 2022 WTA Hamburg Open, Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova will compete against Belgium's Maryna Zanevska, the seventh seed.

After defeating Harmony Tan in Strasbourg in May, Maryna Zanevska has not triumphed in a singles event. The 28-year-old Belgian was defeated in the first round at Roland Garros, Berlin, Eastbourne, and Wimbledon after losing to Karolina Pliskova in Strasbourg’s round of eight. Zanevska achieved her best-ever tour-level performance in July of last year when she won her first title in Gdynia. She also advanced to the semifinals in Lausanne in July. Despite having difficulty in singles this year, she her partner Kimberley Zimmermann advanced to the French Open quarterfinals. It would be interesting to see if she can snap her five-match losing streak and resume her winning ways after being seeded seventh in Hamburg.
World No. 101 Viktoriya Tomova will be competing against Zanevska. The Bulgarian player has been in better shape this season than the Belgian player. Tomova’s victories in 2022 have tended to come from lower-level competition, but by her standards, a season record of 30-22 across all levels is impressive. The quarterfinal finish in Eastbourne, where she had joined the main draw as a lucky loser, was Tomova’s highest tour-level performance this year. Most recently, Tomova competed in the WTA 125 in Bastad last week, where she advanced to the semifinals before losing to Su Jeong Jang of South Korea. In the first round on Monday, Tomova will be a small favourite because to her 16-11 record on clay courts across all categories in 2022.
Viktoriya Tomova and Maryna Zanevska will take on each other on Sunday, July 17 in the first round of the 2022 WTA Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 17 and conclude on July 23 this year.

The 2022 Hamburg European Open will have five rounds of play both for the ATP and WTA competitors. These are the first round, second round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 18 to July 24, but the qualifiers will commence from July 16 for both the men’s and women’s categories.
