On January 23, JJ Wolf will compete against fellow countryman and World No. 89 Ben Shelton in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open. J.J. Wolf defeated Michael Mmoh in straight sets to advance to the second round of the Australian Open. This week, both players were looking for their first Grand Slam victory, and for Mmoh in particular, an unlikely path to the fourth round. Following his upset of Alexander Zverev in the previous round, Mmoh appeared to be in complete control as he moved quickly around the court. And he received payment when he successfully broke Wolf’s serve. Interestingly, that was the only ray of sunshine in what the lucky loser found to be a frustrating afternoon.
The Americans have excelled in what is arguably the most open quarter of the Australian Open this year. And when J.J. Wolf competes against Ben Shelton, who is making his Melbourne Park debut, we are now assured of an American quarterfinalist. Shelton, a three-time Challenger Tour champion, made a name for himself in the second half of the previous campaign. He also exhibits the potent weaponry of a massive first serve and displays impressive footwork when running around the court, just like the great American players of the past. The 20-year-old took the game to Alexei Popyrin in the same way that the Australian did against Taylor Fritz the other day.
