Richard Gabriel Cyr Gasquet, born 18 June 1986, is a French professional tennis player. His highest ATP singles ranking of his career is No. 7, which he got on July 9, 2007. On the ATP Tour, he has amassed a total of 15 singles victories. His three semifinal appearances, two at the Wimbledon Championships (in 2007 and 2015), and one at the US Open rank among his best Grand Slam singles performances (in 2013). In ATP World Tour Masters 1000 singles competitions, his best finish was second place in Hamburg in 2005 and Toronto in 2006 and 2012. He and Tatiana Golovin won the mixed doubles match at the 2004 French Open. Along with his doubles partner Julien Benneteau, he also captured the men’s doubles bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics. Gasquet is well recognised for his one-handed backhand and graceful groundstrokes. In March 2021, Gasquet achieved 550 victories on the ATP tour, becoming him just the sixth active player to do so. He presently ranks No. 4 among active players with more than 580 victories.
In the second round of the 2022 Geneva Open, Gasquet defeated top-seeded and World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. Since beating then-World No. 1 Roger Federer in the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals of 2005, Gasquet had never defeated a player ranked in the top two of the rankings. With this victory, Gasquet has now defeated a player ranked somewhere on the ATP Tour between 1 and 100. He defeated Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets in the quarterfinals before falling to Joo Sousa in the semifinals. At Roland Garros, Richard defeated Lloyd Harris in straight sets to win the first round before falling to Sebastian Korda, the 27th seed, in the second round. As of June 27, 2022, he was equal with Andreas Seppi for fifth place on the list of all Grand Slam appearances with 67 thanks to his participation in the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. He beat Mackenzie McDonald and Joao Sousa in five sets to get to Wimbledon’s third round. He also advanced to the third round of the US Open, when he tied Philipp Kohlschreiber and Novak Djokovic for 68th Major appearance.
