In the championship match, he defeated Emil Ruusuvuori to earn his first tour-level championship since 2018. He climbed 51 spots as a result, entering the top 100 at No. 86 on February 7, 2022. After reaching his second season-ending final at the 2022 Geneva Open without dropping a set and recording his biggest win in three years over World No. 25 and fifth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili , he later climbed 16 ranks to return to the top 65 at World No. 63 on 23 May 2022. With the match on the line in the third set, he was defeated by top seed Casper Ruud. In terms of both length (3 hours 4 minutes) and games, it was the season’s longest championship game. He played another lengthy five-set encounter against rookie Tseng Chun-hsin in the first round of the 2022 French Open (4 hours, 23 minutes), and this time he prevailed. He advanced to the quarterfinals of this Major with his partner Marcelo Demoliner for the third time by using a protected ranking at the US Open. He lost to second seed Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round of the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters to finish the season.

Joao Sousa was born on March 30, 1989, in Guimares, Portugal, to Adelaide Coelho Sousa, a bank teller, and Armando Marinho de Sousa, a judge and amateur tennis player. Lus Carlos is Sousa’s younger brother. Sousa started playing tennis at a nearby club with his father when he was seven years old. In his hometown of Guimares, Sousa oversees the Conquistador Palace hotel with his family. On November 13, 2021, the hotel officially opens.
