Bianca Vanessa Andreescu is a Canadian-Romanian professional tennis player. She is the highest-ranked Canadian in Women’s Tennis Association history, with a career-high No. 4 global ranking (WTA). Serena Williams was defeated by Andreescu to win both the US Open and the Canadian Open in 2019. She is the first tennis player from Canada to win a major singles championship[a] and the first in 50 years to win the Canadian Open. She was also the first athlete since Maria Sharapova in 2006 to win a major singles championship as a teenager. Andreescu started playing tennis in her parents’ native Romania before moving back to Canada, where she was born.

She achieved success as a junior, taking home the Orange Bowl and two major doubles championships with fellow countryman Carson Branstine en way to a junior ranking of No. 3 in the world, which was a career high. Andreescu had a breakthrough year in 2019 after not competing in any WTA Tour matches in 2018, starting with a runner-up finish at the Auckland Open, her first tournament of the year. After winning the Indian Wells Open, a Premier Mandatory competition, she gained notoriety. Andreescu qualified for the WTA Finals at the end of the season despite missing several months due to injuries.

Andreescu uses a wide range of shots in her game, which is distinguished by the amount of power she incorporates. Particularly as stated by Martina Navratilova, “The distinction is made when you bring something extra to the table, and Andreescu does so in a big way. Everyone knows how to bang the ball. Imagine the variety—almost—of Martina Hingis, the former world No. 1, but with greater force.  Having good shot selection is one of the cornerstones to her style of play, which she particularly excelled at when she won her first WTA championship of her career at the 2019 Indian Wells Open.

2022 Journey

She prevailed in her opening round match in Rome after Emma Raducanu gave up. She later overcame qualifier Petra Marti and unlucky loser Nuria Parrizas Dáz to go to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinals since Miami in 2021. Then, in the quarterfinals, she was defeated by eventual champion and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Bianca defeated qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure in the second round of the French Open to advance. In the second round, she was defeated by Belinda Bencic in straight sets. Andreescu won matches against Martina Trevisan, Katie Swan, and top seed Daria Kasatkina in Bad Homburg to get to the semifinals on a grass court for the first time. Simona Halep’s withdrawal from the semifinals due to a neck ailment allowed her to advance to the final. In the final, Caroline Garcia defeated her.

She defeated qualifier Emina Bektas in her opening match at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships in in 55 minutes. Andreescu was defeated in straight sets by eventual winner Elena Rybakina in the second round. She lost to Shelby Rogers in two sets at the Silicon Valley Classic, despite the fact that Andreescu was clearly having back pain the entire time. Andreescu defeated Alizé Cornet to go to the third round of the Canadian Open. She fell to Zheng Qinwen in the third round, losing in three sets. Andreescu was defeated in straight sets by Caroline Garcia in the third round of the US Open.

Nicu and Maria Andreescu welcomed Bianca Vanessa into the world in Mississauga, Ontario. When her father accepted a job offer there in 1994, her family left Romania for Canada. While her mother had previously worked at a bank in Romania, Andreescu’s father is a mechanical engineer at an automobile company. When Bianca was six years old, her family returned to Romania so that her mother might launch a business there. They shut down the company after 2.5 years and moved back to Canada. Since then, her mother has served as a financial services company’s chief compliance officer. At the age of seven, Andreescu started playing tennis in Pitești.
