Elise Mertens is a professional tennis player from Belgium who was born on November 17, 1995. She formerly ranked first in the world in doubles. Mertens has won three Grand Slam doubles tournaments: the 2019 US Open, the 2021 Australian Open, and the 2021 Wimbledon Championships alongside Aryna Sabalenka. Alongside Zhang Shuai, Mertens placed second at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. After Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, she was the third Belgian to occupy the top spot in both sports when she first attained it in May 2021. On the WTA Tour, Mertens has won 16 doubles championships, including the 2022 WTA Finals with Veronika Kudermetova. She has also won four titles at the WTA 1000 level and placed second at the 2021 WTA Finals with Hsieh. She is also a successful singles player, having advanced to the semifinals of a major tournament at the 2018 Australian Open and the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2019 and 2020.  Mertens won seven WTA Tour championships, including two at the WTA 500 level, and now holds a career-high singles ranking of No. 12 in the world. Since 2017, she has played for Belgium in the Billie Jean King Cup. She also took part in the singles and doubles competitions at the 2020 Olympic Games.

First WTA title

Mertens won the Hobart International in January after defeating Monica Niculescu, the No. 3 seed, in the championship match. On January 16, 2017, as a result of this, she made her first entry into the WTA top 100. Mertens made history in Hobart by becoming the first woman to win back-to-back championships to start the year. She successfully defended her 2017 championship by defeating Mihaela Buzărnescu in the final. She also won the doubles championship alongside Demi Schuurs. She defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in straight sets to claim the championship. She also won the doubles title with fellow native Kirsten Flipkens. Two weeks later, she defeated Australian Ajla Tomljanovi in straight sets to win the singles title at the Morocco Open.

2022 journey

At the Sydney Classic, where she started her 2022 season, Mertens was defeated by Daria Kasatkina in the second round.  At the Australian Open, she was the 19th seed and advanced to the fourth round before falling to Danielle Collins, the 27th seed and eventual champion.  In doubles, she was seeded third and advanced to the semifinals with her new partner Veronika Kudermetova, where they were defeated by the eventual winners Barbora Krejková and Kateina Siniaková. At Roland Garros, she was the 31st seed and advanced to the fourth round before falling to the 18th seed and eventual champion, Coco Gauff. She and Kudermetova, the second-seeded doubles pair, were defeated by Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan, the 13th-seeded team, in the third round. She reclaimed her No. 1 doubles ranking at the tournament’s end on June 6, 2022, despite the defeat in the third round.
