Tennis player Claire Liu was born in the United States on May 25, 2000. She attained a career-high singles ranking of No. 60 on October 24, 2022. After winning the girls’ singles title at Wimbledon and placing second at the French Open, she topped the junior world rankings in 2017 and was the top player overall. In 2016, Liu and Usue Arconada won a junior Grand Slam doubles championship at Wimbledon. As a pro, Liu has won six singles titles and one doubles title in competitions on the ITF Women’s Circuit in addition to one singles title and one doubles title on the WTA Challenger Tour.

In 2016, Liu and fellow American Usue Arconada won the Junior Wimbledon doubles competition. They defeated Mariam Bolkvadze and Caty McNally in the final in straight sets. After losing to Whitney Osuigwe in the Junior French Open final the following year, she fought back to defeat Ann Li for the Wimbledon singles title, becoming the first American girl to accomplish it since Chanda Rubin in 1992. With this Grand Slam victory, Liu became the top-ranked junior girl in the world.

Grand Slam debut

In March 2015, she claimed her first professional victory at an ITF Women’s Circuit clay-court competition in Orlando. Since Anna Kournikova in 1996, Liu was the youngest tennis player to win a professional match at the age of 14. In her first appearance at the US Open in 2015, Liu was given a wildcard to the preliminary round. In her first two matches, she defeated Verónica Cepede Royg and ninth-seeded Jana epelová before falling to the 26th-seeded Alexandra Panova in the semifinals. In the mixed-doubles competition, Liu and Taylor Fritz received wild cards as well. However, they lost to eventual champions Martina Hingis and Leander Paes in the opening round.

Liu received a wildcard into the US Open qualifying again after winning two ITF tournaments in 2017. She won the qualifying match by defeating each of her three opponents, earning her a place in the singles main draw of a Grand Slam competition for the first time. There, Duan Yingying defeated her in the opening round in straight sets. Liu and Taylor Johnson were eliminated in the first round at the US Open in their maiden Grand Slam doubles main-draw match.

2018-22 Journey

Liu won each of her qualifying matches for the 2018 Wimbledon Championships, which allowed her to progress to the main event. She was defeated by eventual champion Angelique Kerber in the second round. The only participant in the competition to defeat Kerber in a set was Liu. Liu won her fourth victory on the ITF Circuit in October 2019 at a $25k competition in Florence, South Carolina.  Liu won back-to-back tournaments in May 2021 at a $60k event in Charlottesville, Virginia, after placing second in two tournaments each in 2020 and 2021. In Charleston, there are and a $100,000 tournament.  She consequently rose to the top 100 on August 23, 2021. She lost to Martina Trevisan, a first-time WTA finalist, in Rabat in May when she advanced to her first WTA Tour tournament final. She consequently rose to the top 75 on May 23, 2022.
