Donna Vekic began her final push on the 2022 WTA Tour in San Diego with a resounding 7-6(3), 6-1 win over fifth seed Maria Sakkari in the opener. The 26-year-old Croat began as a qualifier and easily defeated Elizabeth Mandlik and Lauren Davis in straight sets to advance to the main draw. Donna is hoping to turn around a season that has been largely disappointing, with two quarter final appearances in Birmingham and Tallinn being her two high points. In the first, she defeated Coco Vandeweghe and Catherine McNally, while in the second, she defeated Shuai Zhang. Vekic, a former top-20 player, is now ranked #77, with a 20-18 record.
Karolina Pliskova, world No. 22 and former world No. 1, defeated Caroline Dolehide 6-3, 6-4 to begin her campaign in San Diego. After battling injury and subsequent recovery in the early season, the Czech has had a long, slow road to the top. In fact, we didn’t see her play consistently until the US Open swing, when she reached the semis in Toronto and the quarterfinals in the US Open. Pliskova, on the other hand, has been inconsistent; she lost in round two to Petra Martic in Tokyo. She was recently defeated in round one of her home tournament in Ostrava by American youngster Alycia Parks.
