Botic Van De Zandschulp won a challenging match against the skilled Flavio Cobolli in the second round of his ATP Pune debut (R1 bye). The second seed used his experience to defeat the Italian, who had leads of 5-2 and 4-1 in the first and second sets, respectively. The top-ranked Dutchman is now a top-50 player while the German is outside the top 150 as a result of his excellent results at the highest level since the US Open in 2021. When Maximilian Marterer attained his peak ranking of #45 in 2018, he was outside the top 500.

In Pune, Maximilian Marterer is having a great week. He defeated last year’s semifinalist Elias Ymer in the first round and former world #27 Laslo Djere in the second round after defeating the dangerous Nikola Milojevic and former Indian #1 Prajnesh Gunneswaran in the qualifying rounds. World No. 159 reached his first ATP quarterfinal since Kitzbuhel in 2020 after only winning one main-draw match in tour-level competitions last year (R2 at Wimbledon). However, he has already won two such matches in the first week of 2023. The 27-year-old has a 1-3 record in ATP tournament quarterfinals, with his lone victory coming against Marton Fucsovics in ATP Munich five years ago in straight sets.
