At the Paris Masters, Frances Tiafoe got off to a quick start by defeating Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets. Tiafoe defeated Sonego 6-4, 6-4 in a match that lasted one hour and fifteen minutes. Sonego faced zero break points throughout the match. The world’s number 21 player, who reached the U.S. Open semifinals this year, won 84% of his first deliveries, hit 22 winners, and took 18 of 23 net points. Tiafoe, who recently reached the finals in Tokyo, was coming off a loss in Vienna’s opening round. In his two finals this year in Estoril and Tokyo, Tiafoe, who won his only championship in Delray Beach in 2018, finished in second place.
45 in the world Jack Draper made his Paris Masters debut on Tuesday, winning the first round and moving on to the round of 32. The 20-year-old British player defeated French wild card Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4 by winning 97% (30 of 31) of his points on his first serve. The lefty faced no break points in the opening set of the one-hour, 31-minute match. In the match’s final game, he did encounter his first two break points, but he avoided both of them to convert the match point and advance to the next round. With the victory, Draper’s season record on the tour increased to 17-11 and his overall record to 44-16.
