Dominic Thiem beat Federico Delbonis in the second round of the Swiss Open to advance to the quarter-final.
Dominic Thiem might have been out of the spotlight for a considerable amount of time but the 2022 Swiss Open presents the Austrian with the perfect opportunity to bounce back. Once one of the brightest prospects in the world tennis, Thiem’s form has taken a rather steep dip in recent times. The former world no. 3 is currently ranked 274 in the world and at the age of just 28, that is something the Austrian will look to turn around. Thiem beat Federico Delbonis in the second round of the Swiss Open to advance to the quarter-final. The score at the end of the tie was 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
The Austrian will go up against Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru next. Varillas, who was the top seed in the qualifiers, shocked third seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the second around, winning by 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. Before that, the Peruvian had recorded another unlikely victory, his time over Lorenzo Sonego in the first round.
Dominic Thiem and Juan Pablo Varillas will take on each other on Friday, July 22 in the quarter final of the 2022 Swiss Open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 17 and conclude on July 23 this year.
