Iga Swiatek, the current world number one, will take on Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan on January 22 in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open. Iga’s first-round match against Germany’s Jule Niemeir was her most challenging victory of the competition thus far. At the crucial point of 5-4 in the first set, Iga saved the only break point and closed the set at 6-4. Both players broke serves in the second set, with the World No. 1 ultimately winning. Even though Iga defeated the German in straight sets (6-4, 7-5), it took her almost two hours to do so. The third-round match between Iga Swiatek and Cristina Busca from Spain was a masterclass in dominance, with Swiatek winning in just 55 minutes. Busca was only able to win one game before Swiatek defeated them 6-0, 6-1.

However, Elena Rybakina’s journey wasn’t as smooth as that of her rival to the Round of 16. In the opening round, Rybakina defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy 7-5, 6-3. Several service games were broken in the opening set, with Rybakina breaking Cocciaretto’s first service game to take a 3-0 lead. At 5-3, Cocciaretto broke Rybakina’s serve, putting her back in the game. However, Rybakina broke her rival’s serve at the critical 6-5 point to take the opening set 7-5. To win the game, Rybakina easily closed out the second set at 6-3.
