Katie Swan and Nao Hibino are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinals of the 2022 WTA Chennai Open on Friday, September 16.
Swan won the Chennai Open over Jodie Burrage after competing in an ITF competition leading up to it. Katie Swan has now won back-to-back matches to reach the quarterfinals in what appears to be a continuation of the same form. It began with a 6-1, 6-2 thrashing of Arianna Hartono in the first round, before Swan needed a break in the first set against Anastasia Gasanova in round two. Swan eventually won 7-6 (5), 6-2 to advance to the round of eight. What makes these results noteworthy is that it is the first time she has won consecutive matches in the main draw of a WTA event.
Nao Hibino had to make it through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw after falling out of the top 180 on the WTA Rankings. Which is unfortunate given that the 27-year-old was once on the verge of breaking into the top 50. Hibino’s form has deteriorated in recent years, especially since the pandemic outbreak in 2020. Hibino had just won her second WTA title, which she had won in Hiroshima in 2019. Hibino has shone brightly in Chennai, winning four consecutive matches, including two qualifiers, to reach the last eight. She has only lost 15 games in her four victories.
