Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas booked his place in the finals of the Barcelona Open with a convincing win over Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. Tsitsipas, who made the finals of this event in 2018 as well, beat Sinner 6-3, 6-3. The winner of the Monte Carlo Masters event, Tsitsipas continues to be unbeaten on clay this year. He has now won 9 games on the red soil without once having to taste defeat. The 22-year old will face either Rafael Nadal or Pablo Carreno Busta in the summit clash.

Tsitsipas also went level with Andrey Rublev for most number of wins on the Tour this season. Both players have won 26 matches so far, although Tsitipas has lost only 5 to Rublev’s 6.

The match started tight, with the first six games seeing both players hold serve. However, Tsitsipas got the much-needed break and then held serve thereafter.

He had to fight hard to save a couple of break points early in the second set. However, he held out and managed another break in the final game to seal the win.

‘Great to be back in final’

After the match, Stefanos Tsitsipas said that the match was a close one and that he was glad to reach the final again. He had previously lost in 2018 to Nadal in the summit clash.

“It was very close. It was a close match,” said Tsitsipas. “He had a lot of break point opportunities on my serve. It could have been different, but I stayed tough and I converted those break points [I had]. That was crucial and very important.”

“It feels great to be back [in the final]. I will try to redeem myself from last time… I am looking forward to whoever I have to play,” said Tsitsipas. “A final is always a very important phase in a tournament.”

Sinner, who made it to the finals of two tournaments this year, will be disappointed not to complete the trifecta of finals appearances.
