Denis Shapovalov and Rio Noguchi will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Thursday, October 6.
After going on a six-match losing run in the middle of the 2022 season, Denis Shapovalov has since won at least one match in each of the past four tournaments, including a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Steve Johnson in the opening round of the Tokyo Open. In recent weeks, the former Canadian No. 1 won two wins each at the US Open and the Cincinnati Masters. Last week, he competed in his first championship match of the year in Seoul, where he was defeated in the title match by the underdog Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) in straight sets.
Rio Noguchi feels a little unlucky to be in the second round in Tokyo since Ramkumar Ramanathan, his rival and fellow qualifier, played just as well but didn’t take advantage of his opportunities. The Japanese player lost the second set, 6-4 3-6 7-6, having saved breakpoints in his first serve game in the first and third sets. Nevertheless, the tour-level main-draw debutant merits this accomplishment since he worked really hard in recent months on the lower-level circuits. He played two matches in two different venues last Saturday and gave up a chance to win the title at ITF Kashiwa to compete for a main-draw spot in Tokyo on Sunday. He is presently on a 17-match winning streak at all levels.
Denis Shapovalov and Rio Noguchi are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Thursday, October 6. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
