Maria Sakkari, who reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati in 2019, will look to this tournament to turn things around quickly before the start of the US Open. Sakkari has yet to produce a notable performance in the US Open Series after two tournaments. Sakkari had a first-round bye in San Jose but was eliminated by Shelby Rogers, who allowed her to win only four games. Following a hard-fought second-round victory over Sloane Stephens in Toronto, Sakkari was defeated by Karolina Pliskova in the third round of the Canadian Open. Caroline Garcia had gone into her first round match as a favorite, but a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Petra Martic would have been a deeply satisfying experience. Especially given that the world number 35 had to qualify for the main draw and had only won three of her previous 11 matches on hard court this season. Garcia needed an hour and 20 minutes to complete the match, breaking her opponent three times while saving all four break-points she faced. This comes after a first-round loss at the Canadian Open last week, where she was a 3/5 favorite.
