On Friday, in the quarterfinal round of the WTA Slovenia open Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan will face Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.
Lesia Tsurenko fell to world no. 4 Paula Badosa in the first round of the US Open after competing in her first match in more than a month and a half following her retirement in Budapest. She had won 17 games in her previous six competitions, and before New York, she had made significant advancements. The Ukrainian has withdrawn or retired five times in the past year, largely because of a right elbow issue that has persisted. He also experienced cramping in New York. In the first round of Slovenia open she defeated Elena Gabriela Ruse in three set match meanwhile in next round she defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight set.
Elena Rybakina is unlikely to feel good about herself now that she is a member of the All England Club. Garbine Muguruza may have been defeated by her in a quarterfinal in Cincinnati, but she also lost in the first round to Clara Burel in New York and Daria Kasatkina in San Jose. Up until recently, the Kazakh was enjoying a disappointing season. She only had a few quarterfinal or higher finishes in the early part of the season, but after winning Wimbledon’s championship match against Simona Halep and Ons Jabeur, she stepped up her game (previously never been past a quarterfinal in majors). In the first round she defeated Laura Siegemund in stunning 3 set thriller match, after that she defeated Tereza Martincova in Staright sets.
Elena Rybakina and Lesia Tsurenko are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 WTA Slovenia Open on Friday, September 16. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 12 and end on September 18.
