Casper Ruud rebounded from a mid-match hiccup to beat French lucky loser Corentin Moutet 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2 on Sunday to reach the US Open quarter-finals for the first time.
On Sunday at the US Open, Matteo Berrettini discovered that there was no simple route past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Nonetheless, the Italian showed his own capacity to dig deep, winning 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the pair’s fourth-round match at the hard-court Grand Slam. Berrettini appeared to have gained control of the three-hour, 45-minute match after finding rhythm behind his serve and massive forehand after a poor start that had him losing by a set and a break. However, the Spaniard responded to boisterous crowd backing by storming back with a remarkable fourth-set performance that forced a decider at Louis Armstrong Stadium. The Italian will face Casper Ruud in the last eight.
Casper Ruud rebounded from a mid-match hiccup to beat French lucky loser Corentin Moutet 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2 on Sunday to reach the US Open quarter-finals for the first time. The Norwegian was pushed to the limit in his five-set third-round triumph against Tommy Paul, but he appeared to be on track for a straightforward victory over Moutet at Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, after leading 4-2 in the third set, the 23-year-old lost concentration and control on his forehand, allowing Moutet to rally and take a foothold in the match. Ruud, on the other hand, would not be refused. He saved three break points in the fourth set to advance after three hours and 22 minutes.
Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud are scheduled to face each other on Tuesday, September 6 in the quarter-final of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
