Arthur Rinderknech and Roman Safiullin will take on each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Tel Aviv Open on Friday, September 30.
To advance to the ATP Tel Aviv quarterfinals, Arthur Rinderknech defeated world No. 17 Diego Schwartzman in three sets in a match between two players who were both out of form and lacking in confidence. In the match, he faced more breakpoints (8 vs. 7), and in the decisive set, 6-3 2-6 7-6, he fell behind early by a break. On the indoor hard courts in Metz last week, the 27-year-old Frenchman won back-to-back main-draw matches in tour-level competitions for the first time since February. However, his run there came to an end at the hands of the defending champion Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinal.
Following this week’s first-round victory against Hugo Grenier (FRA) in three sets, Roman Safiullin defeated clay-court specialist Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets, 3-6 6-4 6-2 and 6-1 6-4, respectively. Early in the 2022 season, the brilliant but inconsistent Russian produced some of his greatest tennis. He made his first (and only prior) quarterfinal appearance on the main circuit at an indoor tournament in Marseille around that time, defeating the top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-4, 6-4.
