Raducanu and Gauff will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 18.
Emma Raducanu was forced to retire in the second round due to a left ankle injury, and she left the Auckland indoor courts in tears. She didn’t appear completely assured in her movements on Monday, but she still got off to a strong 6-3, 6-2 win over Tamara Korpatsch to open her second Australian Open (2022, 2R). The British player has achieved back-to-back match victories a total of six times since the 2021 US Open, when she became history’s first qualifier to win a major. Three of those occurrences took place at WTA 250s alone. In order to achieve her best grand slam performance since her victory at Flushing Meadows, she faces a formidable challenge.
Coco Gauff started 2023 with a six-match winning streak after finishing 2022 with a five-match losing streak. She recently won her first outdoor hard-court championship in Auckland without dropping a set, and she capitalised on that success by defeating defending doubles champion Katerina Siniakova, 6-1, 6-4. When she made her professional debut at the Australian Open when she was only 15, she joined the tournament’s second week; her subsequent two trips, however, ended abruptly. The teen is overjoyed after finishing in the top 10 for the first time and reaching her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros.
