Nadia Podoroska of Argentina will play Brazil's Laura Pigossi, who is rated 113th, in the second round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Wednesday.
Nadia Podoroska, who was once rated 36th in the world, is currently outside the top 200 due to her injury worries. After taking a 10-month vacation from professional athletics, Podoroska eventually made a comeback last month and has since been working to climb the rankings. A few ITF semifinal appearances would have been beneficial, but Podoroska really needs performances like the one she displayed in this first round. The Argentinean player defeated Alexandra Ignalik of Romania 6-1, 6-1 in her opening match to advance to the round of 16. Following her triumph in the first round, Podoroska’s challenge will only get tougher. Particularly because of how it is done.
Pigossi, who entered this competition’s main draw as a lucky loser, shocked Varvara Gracheva in the first round with a one-sided match. Pigossi defeated Gracheva 6-2, 6-4 to go to the second round in two hours despite being the 7/5 underdog in her opening match. When she broke Gracheva twice in the opening set, the 113th-ranked woman got off to a flying start and sprinted to a 4-0 lead before losing the final two games. The second set appeared to follow a similar pattern as Pigossi’s lead increased to 5-1 at one point. Prior to Pigossi securing a spot in the second round, Gracheva mounted a late comeback and managed to preserve three match points.
Nadia Podoroska and Laura Pigossi will face each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA Poland Open on Wednesday, July 27. The WTA 250 competition is scheduled to start from July 25 and end on July 31 this year.
