On Sunday, the 2022 WTA Budapest Grand Prix final will feature American Bernarda Pera and Serbian Aleksandra Krunic.
By winning the first WTA singles final of her career in Budapest, 27-year-old Bernarda Pera created personal history. She’s been waiting a long time for this moment. She started out as a qualifier in the competition and beat Sofia Shapatava and Katarina Zavatska to get to the main draw. She then defeated Anna Bondar, Marina Ribera, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets. For Pera, 2022 has been a year of firsts. In Melbourne Set 1, she and Katerina Siniakova won their first WTA doubles title, and later, they finished second in the Karlsruhe Challenger. Her current score is 17-13.
Aleksandra Krunic has excelled in the competition this week, and if she keeps up her current pace, she has every chance of winning the match. She overcame Chinese veteran Shuai Zhang 6-1, 6-0 after defeating Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round. She defeated Xiyu Wang in the quarterfinal, dropping just one game in the process. Similar results occurred in the semifinal, as she defeated number three seed and incumbent champion Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-2. With both victories, the Serbian has increased her win total for the year to 14-16 and is getting closer to winning her first singles championship since 2018 June.
Bernarda Pera and Aleksandra Krunic will take on each other on Saturday, July 17 in the final of the 2022 WTA Budapest Grand Prix. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 11 and conclude on July 17 this year.
