Victoria Azarenka and Jessica Pegula will square off in the 2023 Australian Open quarterfinals. To advance to the fourth round, Pegula defeated Marta Kostyuk, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and Jacqueline Cristian. She then faced Barbora Krejcikova, the 2021 French Open champion. In the seventh game of the first set, Pegula broke Krejcikova’s serve to move ahead 4-3. At 5-4, she had a few set points on her opponent’s serve, but the Czech was able to hold. The American then failed to win the next game to finish the set. Pegula successfully served the set out on her second attempt after obtaining a second break of serve to take the lead at 6-5. The 28-year-old won the match 7-5, 6-2 after sprinting to a 5-1 lead in the second set. For the third consecutive year, she has now advanced to the quarterfinals in Melbourne.

Azarenka advanced to the fourth round, where Zhu Lin awaited her, by defeating Sofia Kenin, Nadia Podorska, and Madison Keys. In the first set, the Belarusian lost an early break but quickly recovered on serve. She dropped serve once more, but this time she was unable to recover, and the opening set was lost to her. The former World No. 1 gained the crucial break to go ahead 5-4 in the ninth game, and she served out the victory to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
