Ostapenko and Kalinskaya are set to face each other in the first round of the 2023 Adelaide International 2 on Tuesday, January 10.
When she defeated longtime rival and the former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the first round of Adelaide last week, Jelena Ostapenko may have had high expectations for her season. But after that impressive victory over the Czech, she lost shockingly to Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3, 6-0 despite being broken six times. Since the start of the previous season, the former top-5 player has exited in the first or second round 13 times. She has also managed to win a title in Dubai, finals in Eastbourne and Seoul, 14 victories over opponents ranked in the top 50 during the same time period, and she is currently ranked in the top 20.
This past weekend, Anna Kalinskaya advanced through a few players with higher rankings in the Adelaide qualifiers. She saved all four breakpoints in the last two sets to defeat former Brisbane finalist Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6. Then, against another top-50 opponent, Alison Riske, I won 6-3, 7-5. Over the past year, the Russian hasn’t been any more reliable than the Latvian. She only managed to win five consecutive main draw matches in 2022, at most reaching the semifinals of the Guadalajara 250 and the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara 1000. She nearly made her top-50 debut thanks to these helpful few results.

Ostapenko and Kalinskaya will face each other for the first time at the 2023 Adelaide International 2. It would be best for Jelena Ostapenko to not underestimate the Russian. In the past year, Anna Kalinskaya’s ranking has decreased by almost half. In her 16 career meetings with top 20 players, she has prevailed five times, including her most recent two such matches in Guadalajara in October (Barbora Krejcikova and Daria Kasatkina).
