After coming back from a set and break down to overcome sixth seed Emma Raducanu, Jelena Ostapenko is back in the Korea Open championship match. After the 2021 US Open winner retired due to a left glute injury, she grabbed control of the match and advanced with a 4-6, 6-3, 3-0 victory. With the exception of the matchup with 17-year-old lucky loser Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, three of her four rounds have gone to the final. Then needed a third set tiebreak to beat 19-year-old wildcard Jeong Boyoung, and she double-failed to avoid a match point in her match against Anastasia Gasanova.
On her second attempt, Ekaterina Alexandrova won her semifinal match in Seoul. Tatjana Maria, a 35-year-old Wimbledon semifinalist, was quickly defeated by the American, 6-2, 6-4, hitting 29 winners to the German’s two. In each set, she was broken once, but only after holding double break leads. She made her first WTA quarterfinal here at the Korea Open four years ago. She returned to the city the following year and recorded her first-ever outdoor semifinal performance. After defeated three opponents outside the top 140 during her fourth visit, she is now in the championship round.
