With a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, former Top 20 player Riske advanced to her 13th Hologic WTA Tour final.
Sixth seed Alison Riske of the United States and seventh seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil will battle for the Rothesay Open title in Nottingham on Sunday for the first time. When the tournament began, neither player was considered a favourite to win. With a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, former Top 20 player Riske advanced to her 13th Hologic WTA Tour final. Haddad Maia advanced to the WTA singles final for the first time since 2017 as an injured Tereza Martincova retired due to a right knee injury. On Sunday, Haddad Maia, the world No. 48, will try to win her maiden WTA singles title. Haddad Maia finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko in her only prior WTA singles final in 2017 Seoul.
Riske won after 2 hours and 22 minutes of play, despite a rain delay of over an hour at the start of the third set. Riske is just one win away from winning her fourth singles title of her career. “[Golubic] is extremely tough to play out here, especially in these conditions,” Riske said afterward. “It was a really challenging day, and honestly it was a huge win for me just personally, because it really took a lot from me to get over the hump today. I’m extremely proud of my effort.”
Haddad Maia has been in fantastic form in recent weeks, and she is currently ranked at the top of her career. Haddad Maia went 9-1 in WTA 125 clay competitions over a two-week period in May, capturing the title in Saint-Malo and being runner-up in Paris. “Unfortunately, it is not the way I wanted to win,” Haddad Maia said afterward. “But I think I deserve to be here [in the final]. I’m working very hard in all my matches. I think I gave everything, I left everything on the court, and I’m very happy to be in my first grass WTA final.”
