Top seed Daniil Medvedev has had a fine start to his 2022 grass season as he made it through to the final of the Libema Open on Saturday. The Russian had to overcome a tough challenge in the form of Adrian Mannarino who gave him a run for his money. Medvedev will go up against unseeded Dutch player Tim van Rijthoven in the final. Van Rijthoven put in an exceptional performance to overcome second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semis in a match that lasted the full three sets. It was a victory to remember for the Dutchman who will perhaps play the biggest match of his career on Sunday. It will be important for Medvedev to win his first grass-court tournament of the season ahead of Wimbledon but his opponent will not give up without a fight.

Medvedev edges past Mannarino

Daniil Medvedev has yet to win a tournament in 2022, but he appears to be determined to change that this week at the Libema Open in Hertogenbosch. With a 7-5, 7-5 victory against Adrian Mannarino at the ATP 250 event on Saturday, the World No. 2 stopped the Italian’s eight-match winning streak and set up a title showdown against Dutch wild card Tim Van Rijthoven. Medvedev’s ability to find a way to win despite a lack of rhythm has been a highlight of his performances this week in the Netherlands. The win over Mannarino was solid rather than sensational, but Medvedev will be pleased with how he handled a true grass-court threat in the form of the Frenchman’s flat-hitting.

Van Rijthoven vs Auger-Aliassime

On Saturday, the Dutch wild card won a thrilling semi-final battle against Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Libema Open, keeping his nerve to win 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(5) and advance to the title match in only his second ATP Tour tournament. “I’d like to thank all the people that came out today, the support was incredible,” said Van Rijthoven after becoming the first Dutchman to reach the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch since Raemon Sluiter in 2009. “I don’t know where to start. I got the wild card here which was already a surprise for me. I was just happy to play one or two matches at least. To be in the final is just incredible, I have no words.”
