After having knee surgery in the second half of 2022, Oscar Otte started to have a propensity to blow opportunities and lose games that were closely contested. Sadly, it appears that this behaviour has persisted into 2023. In the first two months of the 2023 season, the German has lost six of eight matches, winning at least a set in only four of them. Midway through 2022, he was in the best shape of his life, but the knee injury he sustained completely stopped his progress. He has since exhibited a lack of confidence in every game he has played.

In 2022, the former world number 36 qualified for the ATP Acapulco tournament and lost to Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets. With his ranking now higher, he was able to qualify for the first round of the tournament as well as enter the main draw directly this time.

Since the ATP tour resumed in the second half of 2020 following the pandemic break, there have been a lot of surprises. This week’s qualification of Jacopo Berrettini for the Acapulco main draw can be added to the ever-expanding list of such unexpected results. The younger brother of former Italian No. 1 Matteo Berrettini, the 24-year-old Italian is not a bad player, but his recent play has been disappointing. He is presently ranked #842 in the world and has not demonstrated any appreciable improvement at any level for nearly four seasons. Even worse, he had a disastrous opening to his Acapulco qualifying run after being defeated in the first set of his QR1 match. He was able to recover, though, and triumph in four straight sets in his matches against Geoffrey Blancaneaux and Luciano Darderi to earn an unexpected spot in the main draw.
