Novak Djokovic beat Tomas Machac in the opening round of the ATP Dubai. The Czech, who had recently lost to players like Filip Misolic and Alexandre Muller, was able to make ten breakpoint opportunities on the Serbian’s serve and play for two hours and 27 minutes. The 2023 season’s first two months saw a number of below-average performances from the world no. 1 player. Though he has a history of sluggish starts to his campaigns, particularly after coming back from a significant break, this particular match against Tomas Machac shouldn’t be a cause for concern. After winning the Australian Open last month, he drew even with Rafael Nadal in the race for the majors, and he will now try to match the Spaniard’s winning streak that dates back to the beginning of 2022, when he was mostly forced to watch from the sidelines due to his immunisation status.

He has a 13-0 record so far in 2023 and needs eight more victories to match Nadal’s streak of 20 victories in a row at the same point in 2022. The 35-year-old has won the trophy five times in Dubai, and in his 12 previous appearances, he has never advanced further than the quarterfinals.

Tallon Griekspoor has played a lot of games in 2023 despite dealing with some fitness issues earlier this month. He has not shown any signs of slowing down. He recently competed in his third straight match and sixth three-setter of the year against Constant Lestienne in Dubai. The 26-year-old has been out of contention for the top spot in the Dutch player rankings for a few years, but he is close to passing Botic Van De Zandschulp in the current live rankings and regaining that position. This is made possible by his strong start to the year, which included winning his first ATP title in Pune and making it all the way to the semifinals at home in Rotterdam.

The only three competitors who were able to defeat him lost their respective championships. While Andrey Rublev was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Doha Open last week, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner finished second at the Australian Open and Rotterdam, respectively.
