Jule Niemeier vs Caroline Dolehide will face each other in the first round of the 2023 Monterrey Open on Monday, February 27.
Being 0-7 against top 100 players and having lost seven of nine matches to start this season won’t make Jule Niemeier happy. She lost to Camila Osorio in Lyon in straight sets, Anastasia Potapova in Linz in three sets, and Panna Udvardy in Merida in straight sets all within this month. She worked on those three matches for a total of seven hours, thirty minutes, and received nothing. The German player, 23, is attempting to build on her 2022 campaign, in which she finished with quarterfinal finishes in Lausanne and Cluj-Napoca as well as a last-16 finish at the US Open and nearly reached the Wimbledon semifinals.
In the Monterrey qualifying, Caroline Dolehide started her sixth season. Lesia Tsurenko defeated her in the first round of Merida qualifying, and she had lost all five of her prior matches. However, this past weekend, she defeated Laura Pigossi and Marcela Zacarias in straight sets to qualify. When she was just 19 years old in July 2018, the 24-year-old former top 20 junior player reached as high as the 102nd spot. She is still awaiting her significant on-tour breakthrough, though. She is currently ranked outside of the top 200 and hopes to improve her 10-26 WTA main draw win-loss record and 3-11 record since the 2021 season’s beginning.
