Jessica Pegula and Ana Bogdan will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 WTA Dubai Open on February 22.
Jessica Pegula can be excused for dropping the first set to qualifier and world No. 99 Viktoriya Tomova before holding on to win 6-2, 5-7, 6-1; in the second set, she was broken three times and had game points in each of those games. Given that she had just finished as the runner-up in the singles and won the doubles titles in Doha, there was a hint of exhaustion. The American has won 12 of her first 15 games to start the season, making it to the quarterfinals of her fifth major tournament in Melbourne and coming in second place to Iga Swiatek in Qatar. She keeps up her scorching form, which has helped her reach 11 quarterfinals since the year 2022 began and earned her her second career victory at the Guadalajara 1000 competition in October.
Ana Bogdan turned a four-match losing streak into a four-match winning streak after arriving in Dubai. After defeating Clara Burel and Tereza Martincova in the qualifying rounds and Laura Siegemund and Shelby Rogers in the main draw, she has not lost a set. She did fall behind the American in the first set before winning 7-6, 6-3. It is a remarkable performance coming from a player who previously lost in the qualifying round in 2020 and the first round in 2021 in Dubai. She won a 125K championship at home, advanced to the Warsaw final, Portoroz semifinal, and Parma final in late last year. However, her current demand, a first career quarterfinal above WTA 250, is on an entirely new scale.

In the qualifiers of Hertogenbosch and ITF Ilkley, Jessica Pegula defeated the Romanian twice in the 2015 grass swing to take a 2-0 lead. She had missed the entire 2014 season and was in the midst of her comeback. Ana Bogdan, who has an 0-4 career record against top-10 players, will be the definite underdog.
