Iga Swiatek and Barbora Krejcikova will take on each other in the final of the 2023 WTA Dubai Open on February 25.
The Dubai Tennis Championships’ championship match pits top seed Iga Swiatek against Barbora Krejcikova on Saturday. After successfully defending her title at the Qatar Open, Swiatek entered the competition and was given a bye into the second round. In order to advance to the quarterfinals, she first defeated Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 6-1 before crushing Liudmila Samsonova, the 14th seed, 6-1, 6-0. Karolina Pliskova was supposed to face Swiatek in the round of eight, but the Czech withdrew due to illness, giving the top-ranked player a walkover to the semifinals. She won this match against Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-2 to advance to her second straight final.
Barbora Krejcikova has had a fantastic run in Dubai, and this competition might be just what the Czech player needs to return to her top form on the singles circuit. The 27-year-old began the WTA 1000 tournament by defeating Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-2, and then defeated seventh-seeded Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in three sets of fierce competition. In the third round, Krejcikova defeated fellow countrywoman Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Here, despite being trounced in the first set, she pulled off a major upset by inflicting Aryna Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, with her first loss of the 2023 campaign.
In the semifinal match against third-seeded Jessica Pegula, the 2021 French Open champion easily won the first set, 6-1. The American, however, recovered in the second and won it 7-5 to send the game to a decider. To advance to her second WTA 1000 final, Krejcikova dominated the decisive set and won it 6-0. It’s interesting to note that she won her first match at the Dubai Tennis Championships in 2021.
