Camila Giorgi and Sloane Stephens will take on each other in the quarter-final of the 2023 ATP Merida Open on February 25.
Since the beginning of the last season, Sloane Stephens has only amassed 20 victories (at a cost of 20 defeats), with 10 of those victories occurring in Mexico alone. In the second round’s decisive set, Varvara Gracheva had a 0-3 advantage over her. She would have melted in any other nation given her current form, but in Mexico, she came back to win 5-7, 6-2, 7-6. The game lasted for two hours and forty-six minutes. She had a 0-3 season record and a 0-6 set record when she arrived in Merida. The 2016 Acapulco champion defeated qualifier Leolia Jeanjean, 6-1, 6-3, to earn her first victory in 2023. She will play only her sixth quarterfinal match in the previous three and a half years up next.
For the once-top-3 player, the past few years have been a complete disaster. She did manage to stay in the top 50 over the past 12 months, though, by winning a WTA 250 title in Guadalajara and making it to the quarterfinals of Roland-Garros and the Guadalajara WTA 1000. She only achieved back-to-back victories in those three contests in 2022.
The first quarterfinal appearance by Camila Giorgi since Eastbourne eight months ago. Despite some contrast, she has won both of her matches in straight sets. The Italian defeated Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, 7-6, 6-2, losing only six games to sixth-seeded Mayar Sherif after coming back from 3-5 down in the first set. She is finally making her long-awaited debut in Mexico, and things are going well so far. Since winning the WTA 1000 Canada title in 2021, the 31-year-form old’s has completely collapsed. She was only able to compete in two quarterfinals on grass last year, losing at this stage in Birmingham but winning one round more in Eastbourne.
