Jaume Munar and Chun-hsin Tseng will face one another in the second round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on August 24.
Jaume Munar was never considered a good hard-court player, but his recent play shows that he is gradually improving on the surface. Beating players like Christopher O’Connel and Steve Johnson in Cincinnati is certainly commendable for a clay player. The most intriguing aspect is that he is playing the same style on hard courts that he does on clay, and it is working. Munar is a long rally player who keeps the ball in play while gradually breaking down his opponent with a combination of changing pace and attacking. To the untrained eye, it appears defensive, but it is actually offensive and tactical. The only way to beat him is to seize the initiative and quickly finish off points.
Chun-hsin Tseng has a 37-16 record this year, with some solid wins and a steady rise that has him playing ATP events on a regular basis. And the tennis is generally very good, with some notable victories. He recently defeated Pedro Martinez in the Cincinnati qualifiers. Tseng is not a physically imposing player, but he plays very boldly and can certainly surprise you. Because he has yet to find a good balance in his game, most of his wins and losses come after three sets, and his consistency suffers as a result. It’s typical of a young player. Because he’s not very good at attacking on paper, facing Munar will present several challenges for him.
