On Wednesday, third seed Garbine Muguruza will open her Toray Pan Pacific Open campaign against Greek qualifier Despina Papamichail in Tokyo. Following a spectacular 2021 season in which she won three titles. Muguruza has struggled in 2022, posting an 11-15 win-loss record. She has only won consecutive matches in a tournament twice this year, the most recent being at the US Open earlier this month. The former World No. 1’s run was ended in the third round by two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in a third-set tie-break. Muguruza will now focus on maintaining her resurgent form in the fall, with Tokyo serving as her first opportunity.

Meanwhile, Despina Papamichail of Greece is currently ranked 213th in the world. She reached a career-high ranking of 147th in June. On the ITF circuit, Papamichail has 15 singles and 35 doubles titles to her name. Her most recent victory came last June at the $60,000 ITF Charleston Pro. In addition, the 29-year-old finished second at the $60,000 ITF event in Brescia, Italy. On the WTA tour, she won three matches at the Hungarian Open, making it to the round of 16 after qualifying. The Greek won a couple of qualifying matches at this week’s Pan Pacific Open to earn a first-round match against You Xiaodi. Papamichail delivered an outstanding performance to secure a commanding victory over the chinese player.
