While Elise Mertens has been out of form for quite some time, she had no trouble getting past China’s Wang Qiang in her first round match here. The 44th-ranked player defeated Qiang 6-0, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes to earn a spot in the second round alongside Liu. Mertens was looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat after being knocked out in the first round of the US Open following her third round exit in Cincinnati. And she did it in style, saving the only break-point she faced while breaking her opponent four times out of five chances in the match.

While Alison Riske had an early exit in Chennai, she was still considered a heavy favorite going into her first round match against Claire Liu. Liu, on the other hand, wasted no time in getting past Riske and into the second round. In fact, Liu was on court at the same time as Mertens, and she won 6-2, 6-3 to advance. The 84th-ranked player got off to a fast start, breaking serve in the first game and again in the eighth to take the first set. The two then traded breaks in the first two games of the second set before Claire went on a five-game winning streak.
