Daniil Medvedev will be hoping for a better experience down under this time after last year’s performances there had a detrimental impact on his performance and spirits throughout the season. He lost to Ugo Humbert in three sets at the ATP Cup to begin the year, then in the Australian Open final against Rafael Nadal, he lost in tragic fashion in five sets. After winning the title in Vienna in October, the Russian seemed to have found his form and confidence again, but he soon started losing. At the Paris Masters and ATP Finals, he dropped his final four matches of the campaign, and Taylor Fritz defeated him in the championship match of an exhibition tournament in Saudi Arabia.
On outdoor hard courts, Lorenzo Sonego only triumphed seven times in 2022, and four of them victories came at Australian competitions in Sydney and the Australian Open, where he advanced to the quarterfinal and third round, respectively. Even though the Italian lacked consistency and form the majority of the time on the main tour last year, he had his moments.
