Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic has had a hit-or-miss season, with more setbacks than victories. Last year, the 27-year-old had a 41-27 season that included a first-ever WTA final appearance at the Prague Open. Martincova is 18-22 this year across all levels and 13-13 on hard courts. Her best finish this year was a semifinal in Nottingham (on grass). Aside from that, she only made it to one more quarterfinal, in St. Petersburg.
Elena Rybakina is unlikely to feel good about herself now that she is a member of the All England Club. Garbine Muguruza may have been defeated by her in a quarterfinal in Cincinnati, but she also lost in the first round to Clara Burel in New York and Daria Kasatkina in San Jose. Up until recently, the Kazakh was enjoying a disappointing season. She only had a few quarterfinal or higher finishes in the early part of the season, but after winning Wimbledon’s championship match against Simona Halep and Ons Jabeur, she stepped up her game (previously never been past a quarterfinal in majors). In the first round she defeated Laura Siegemund in stunning 3 set thriller match.
Tereza Martincova and Elena Rybakina are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 WTA Slovenia Open on Wednesday, September 14. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 12 and end on September 18.
