Madison Brengle, who had a 0-3 performance in Australia, is back from the land down under. She suffered three-hour-long defeats to Zhu Lin in Auckland (4-6, 7-6, 6-4), and fellow American Bernarda Pera in Hobart (straight sets), as well as Claire Liu at the Australian Open (both in relatively quick fashion). She is not enjoying herself as much as she did on hard courts in North America a few months ago. The 32-year-old planned to reach the quarterfinals in Cleveland and Vancouver at 125K, but he turned up the heat to win three W60 titles in four weeks (Berkeley, Templeton and Macon). She ranked inside the top 100 for the ninth year in a row thanks to them.
In her Lyon debut a year ago, Zhang Shuai accomplished a few long overdue milestones. The 34-year-old won the French trophy after defeating local favourites Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia in straight sets and Dayana Yastremska from a set down in the final. Prior to this, she had never won a WTA championship outside of the Chinese city of Guangzhou. Since then, the Chinese player has maintained his dominance and even achieved a new career-high ranking of No. 22. Recent events include a final in Birmingham, a semifinal in Tokyo, quarterfinals in Cincinnati and Cleveland, and fourth rounds at the US and Australian Opens, where she recently displayed her form.

0-0. Zhang Shuai is the first of the three champions this Lyon tournament has so far produced to come back and defend his title. She recently completed a mixed Australian tour, going 0-2 in Adelaide but rebounding in Melbourne. She will be a difficult opponent for Madison Brengle as she strives for her first victory in 2023.
