Linda Fruhvirtova and Tamara Zidansek will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2023 WTA Thailand Open on February 1.
With 63 minutes of play, Linda Fruhvirtova defeated 37-year-old wildcard Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who wasn’t ranked, 6-3, 6-1, breaking serve seven times. Less than 14 months after playing in the final tournament of her top 2 junior career, the 17-year-old gets one step closer to reaching her top 50 debut milestone. She has advanced to two WTA quarterfinals; initially, in Charleston in 2021, she reached the last eight. However, it was in Chennai in September that she won her first career championship. She made her Australian Open debut two weeks ago, progressed to the second week of her first major tournament, and was one set away from reaching the quarterfinals.
Astra Sharma was defeated by Tamara Zidansek in a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory to celebrate her return to Hua Hin. The victory took 70 minutes. She had a good start to her doubles campaign the next day as well, winning in straight sets with Ellen Perez to advance to the quarterfinals. She had lost her previous five first-round matches when she arrived in Thailand, twice losing to opponents ranked outside the top 200 in the year 2022. Only two WTA quarterfinals have been reached by the 2021 Roland-Garros semifinalist since the start of the previous season: Adelaide in January and Monastir in October. She is currently ranked outside the top 130.
